About the Journal
Contemporaneity: Historical Presence in Visual Culture explores the diverse ways in which the complexities of being in time are expressed. With each new edition, the journal examines how cultures around the world conceive of and construct their present and the concept of presentness, from prehistory to today. Through scholarly writings from several disciplines in the humanities, Contemporaneity maps the dynamic ways that cultures use visual and literary means to record, define, and interrogate their historical context and presence in time.
Contemporaneity is a scholarly, open-access, peer-reviewed journal edited by graduate students in the Department of History of Art & Architecture at the University of Pittsburgh. It is hosted by the University Library System of the University of Pittsburgh as part of its D-Scribe Digital Publishing Program.
